"Miss Representation" Film

I came across this preview for a film entitled "Miss Representation" (a play on words for "misrepresentation") that will be premiering later this week. It is meant to make a statement against the message the media has propagated that "a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader" and will feature interviews with teenage girls and powerful women (including Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, and Gloria Steinem).
The preview states that "while women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors." These statistics are truly striking, and it is refreshing to see that a film is making a notable effort to recognize this problem and uncover "a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see."

  1. I just watched the preview and this looks great. As you said, this is completely refreshing to see and perhaps this will open the door for more media like this. I am looking forward to seeing how they deal with what society should do in order to change these inequalities. In my opinion it is not enough to just use the media as a catalyst for change, though this is incredible important. Nowadays women, and men, help to further this image engendering these inequalities, which is terribly sad but often true. This inequality is deeply rooted within this culture's history and ingrained habits die hard.
