I found the article about Jennifer Miller and Frida to be very compeling and interesting. I admit I was skeptical when first looking at the topic of the "bearded lady," believing that it was another attempt to justify the transgender lifestyle. However I understood Miller's viewpoint that the wearing of the beard was a feminist movement attacking the painful remedies that women conform to remove body hair. I do believe that she did this for its shock value, to draw attention to her cause. However I don't believe that her intent was for all women to do the same.
Questions:
1. To what audience was Jennifer Miller trying to appeal to? From the article it seems that even those in the feminist movement were not too approving of her tactics; possibly bringing the "freak" element to the forefront, not the struggle for gender equality.
2. Why do you believe that Hollywood was not willing to allow Salma Hayek to fully look like Frida? Was it that they still wanted her to retain her well known beauty? Frankly, I feel that if they have allowed her to wear the mustache and the other facial features, attendance in movie would have gone down. It is a business and they want to make money.
