In reading Pare Monsters and Marvels I am just baffled at what those of the time may have thought about this work. Having children myself I can personally attest that children when born are far from perfect looking and all have distinguishing features which may or may not be becoming of an infant. As far as the justification lying in the shape of the mother's womb I must protest that any deformation would most likely be the result of a woman failing to fulling dilate. This may account for subtle deformations; however, I would never related this to monster like qualities.
What there suppose to be some religious meaning behind these deformations? Staring at objects and the influence of the mind of the offspring seems fairly far fetched to me; therefore I would love to find out what the motivation was behind these assumptions.
Was it ever suggested during the era that perhaps these woman had sexual relations with certain animals that resulted in deformed offspring? Why this notion is completely ridiculous I am curious to know if some were making these accusations.
