I came across this article as I was browsing through the Web. I was extremely interested in it because of the different perspective it provided. It was nice to read about transvestites and cross-dressing through the eyes and views of another country other than the United States. Below is the link to the article and, hopefully, you will all find it useful.

Week 10 Blogging Assignment: Rebecca Iloulian
ReplyDeleteToday I saw a show which was put in by the School of Theatre, Called Dangerous Liaisons. In this play, which in set in the late 1700's the male female character says that after her husband died, she never got remarried because she didn't want to be controlled ever again. If she has been remarried she would be living someone else's life where she could not do as she pleased, and would be taking orders from a man. This character also goes around and sleeps with many men, being deceitful and a liar in the process. I think this was very interesting as a story-line and very relevant to this class. Especially in the late 1700's it was very unusual for a woman to not be married, let alone a "male"-anizer. She definitely did not play the stereotypical role of a woman for her time period and really broke that shell. Yet she never confided in anyone of her doings, and was very secretive about her life and the different men she was with. She pretended not to be with them and lied to everyone in her life. This shows that she couldn't reveal her doings, likely because they were not accepted in this time period for a woman to be doing. Woman could not take advantage of men and be a player in this time period, people would seriously condemn this. If she had been honest she would be an outcast and lose all her friends. Yet today in time, it is not nearly the same anymore. Many woman choose not to be married and no one thinks twice about it. Also, if a woman sleeps with many men people don't outcast her. It may be very typical, but it is (to a certain degree) accepted in today's society. It just shows how much society has grown, and yet how little it has grown at the same time. We are only slightly more accepting now in time, almost 250 years later. I just thought this idea was very interesting.

For the article you posted Rubi, it would be interesting if we were able to see where they got their information from. Some of the resposes to some question were not very convincing to me
