The Occupy protests have had a lot of press lately and I was interested in how Occupy represented marginalized groups in American society. On its website, the OWS movement touts itself as a movement with "people of many colors, gender and political persuasions" and the slogan is "We are the 99%". An article from The Nation, however, brings up the question "Where are the women" in OWS? While the movement has been receiving lots of air time for it's cause, especially in the economic aspect of the cause, not much attention has been given to the fact that the movement is largely made up of white males. The movement calls itself the "99%" but the disproportionate number of women in this movement disproves the movement's key slogan. I thought it was interesting that though famous feminists like Judith Butler have stepped out in support of the OWS movement, little attention has been given to the disproportionate gender representation.
