Blog post - Week 3

I really wanted to share this with everyone because it is sort of mind opening. It is about Hibitoe tribe of Papua New Guinea. For these people our traditional gender roles are reversed. I hope this link works, but if it doesn't, please type in Goolge: Hibitoe tribe of Papua New Guinea and gender reversal, and watch a few minutes video, part of the Italian documentary La Donna Nel Mundo, which means women of the world. It is very interesting to see how women are hunting and heavy lifting, and men are beautifying themselves with flowers and make up.

  1. I really like seeing the lifestyle of the Hibitoe people. I attempted to read more about the tribe, because I was wondering about their history and how they came to have these reversed gender roles. Considering that our gender roles are so deeply ingrained, I feel that there must be a similarly long history to the development of the Hibitoe gender roles. I think that these roles are just as restrictive as ours--whenever there is only one acceptable way for one gender to act, even if it is the opposite of what the Western world considers normal, the result is a restrictive and oppressive system.
