Blogging Assignment Week 5

I read an interesting article about Elmhurst College openly asking applicants their sexual orientation which has not usually been directly asked by colleges. Depending on their answer such as if they consider themselves to be a part of the LGBT community, students are eligible for scholarships. I think this is surprising because before people were punished for openly stating a sexual orientation which did not match those accepted by society and now there are scholarships available to them. This fosters acceptance and a more diverse campus.

  1. I guess, in a way, something like this does foster some sense of acceptance, but this almost seems like it intentionally divides those of other sexual orientations which by definition is not equal. Also, why should it be that sexual orientation determines a persons right or lack there of to a scholarship to higher education? The point of creating an aid based scholarship to a specific group of minorities is to provide access to higher education to a minority group that has had historical precedence of being at a disadvantage when it comes to gaining access to higher academia. I am not saying that I agree with this type of scholarship but, people's sexual orientation, typically, does not fall under this category of minority. I understand that the point of this scholarship is to create a more diverse campus, but I just think there are other, more effective ways to raise the acceptance level of people of varying sexual orientations
